I can post written prose on the internet even if I have a ton of run-on sentences and no real point. (Sorry REAL writers. I know this annoys you about as much as tone-deaf people singing covers and going viral annoys me.) Ok, back to writing about my homemade cover song.
I woke one recent morning and couldn’t get this song out of my head for the life of me. I just kept on singing “Somebody la la la, dah dahh dah dah dah dah dah, blah blah blah blah blah blah blah la la la laaaa. She was looking kinda dumb…” Wait? WHAT? I don’t know the lyrics! But the itch wasn’t going to be scratched until I did my research. I geeked out on Smashmouth (did you know they are from San Jose?) I watched their videos. And I learned the lyrics to my favorite song from the movie Shrek…
I did what I do best: flipped a song into a different groove. I like swung 16ths. So sue me. If you don’t know what swung 16ths are, you can go look it up. We live in the internet age. You can pretty much find out anything.
Then I did what I DON’T do best. I made a video. I’m not a camera operator. I’m not a sound engineer. I’m really self-conscious about those things. But if I don’t do something a) by myself (because honestly, who am I gonna call right this second to say “would you please drop everything and come film and audio record me right now?”) and b) fast, then how in the world will I be able to quickly share something for THROWBACK THURSDAY?! Yes. This is a throwback Thursday post. This song was released in 1999. Therefore, we’re going to party like it’s 1999.
Here’s something I do like about this video:
I like this amateur lighting. It kinda makes me look like an American Apparel Model. Except with clothes on. And except I’m not a model, I’m an artist. Newsflash: Artists and Models aren’t the same thing. Yeah. I know. Mind blown.
Speaking of artists, I know this is a cover song. But I’m a real live songwriter working on original material. You just don’t have it yet (and if you’d like it, make sure you sign up for my mailing list so that you’re updated on when that music is released). It’s just that, since I’m a human in living in 2014, I obviously have to have an active YouTube channel. Duh…
